7 Things to do when you don’t want to go back to work

Don't want to go back to work

Quarantine is coming to a close and there are many mixed feelings being spread all throughout the media and social platforms. Some are beyond ready to get back to their job and the normalcy of a regularly scheduled life. Others, though, are dreading going back. That’s who I want to talk to today… those that don’t want to go back to work.

I have been a full-time wife, mom, and business owner for the past 16 years. I remember being in the corporate world and not wanting to make that drive to work anymore. The feeling of being 9 months pregnant, hardly fitting behind the steering wheel (I have really big babies), and sitting in traffic for over an hour each way. Wasting so much time.

I remember not wanting to do dumb stuff for incompetent people anymore and being told where to be and when without any reason or opinion.

Have you felt you had so much more to offer the world and your family than what you were currently doing for other people?

The feeling of walking away from my job forever and going full time in our business and the instant freedom I gained, cannot be fully explained. I was in charge.

If I succeeded it was because of me and if I failed it was because of me.

That feeling was truly worth the hours spent working my job during the day and turning around and investing nights and weekends into my business.

The feeling of literally being 9 months pregnant, walking out of that building with a cardboard box of my stuff in my hands… a box that represented my entire career. Walking out, knowing I was never going to have to return.

It was worth every second and every penny.

So first let’s start with…

WHO: Is this you?

Over the past several weeks, if you have found yourself:

  • Enjoying your time at home
  • Soaking in the quality time with your family… even during the hectic and crazy moments (I live with 3 preteen/teen boys and a toddler girl ~ I understand!)
  • Living a less stressful way of life
  • Realizing this unexpected disruption in your life and schedule has brought beautiful insight and inspiration
  • Refusing to go back to the pace you were living before
  • Feeling in the pit of your stomach that you want to step out to do something else
  • Dreading going back to work on someone else’s schedule

Then read on.

WHY: Would you?

If you’ve ever thought of any of these reasons to do something different:

  1. Extra Income. Just some “extra” to lighten the load of debt and responsibility. To pay off the credit cards, student loan debts, car payments, and more. Not anything crazy, just some extra income to help your current financial situation.
  1. Financial Freedom. Big picture. You don’t want to rely on anyone else for income or to take care of you. You know that if you don’t own it, you don’t control it. You want the freedom to do what you want, when you want, and with who you want to.
  1. Have your own business. That’s just what you want. You have an idea or something you want to create or pursue. You see the excitement and freedom in owning your own business.
  1. More spare time. Quality and quantity time is what you are looking for. You are tired of the demand from a job and boss for your time and would rather spend it with those you love.
  1. Personal development. You want to grow more as a person and a professional. You know you have more inside of you than what you are currently doing and giving. You want to grow into the person you were destined to be.
  1. Helping others. You have a heart to give and serve. You love helping others and wish you could do it on a much bigger scale. You wish you had a bigger platform to help others live a better life.
  1. Meeting new people. Maybe you are looking to expand your network and circle. You know that your network is your net worth. Growing your circle of influence will grow your income. New people can teach you new things.
  1. Retirement. You literally feel you will be working until you die. You have no Plan B, no way to leave your job to go on and live the life you want to live. Maybe you wish you could not only help yourself retire but your parents or someone you love as well, but you just don’t know how.
  1. Leaving a legacy. You want to be remembered by your family, community, maybe the world. You want to do something great that impacts your family financially for generations to come.

SUCCESS PRINCIPLES

Becoming an entrepreneur and starting your own business is not for the faint of heart. Not wanting to go back to work is one thing, actually making that a reality is another.

My husband and I tell all the people that we mentor is that “you’ve got to toughen up.”

Thick skin, soft heart.

If you are often making decisions based on what other people might think… and/or wrecked when they give you a hard time about something… then you have two choices:

  1. Don’t even waste the time and money to start something new
  2. Toughen up

Simply adopt the mantra that:

Other people’s opinions don’t pay my bills!

So where to turn to learn success mindset and overall mental toughness?

BOOKS

There are millions of books that you can pick up and read. Book stores, the internet, and Amazon are LOADED with catchy titles and beautiful covers…

But there are a few that have been impactful for me personally and have helped me grow and develop:

These are in no particular order. However, if you pick up, read, and apply the principles laid out in these books you will succeed in whatever it is you are wanting and pursuing!!

The principles in these books will help speed up the process of you not going back to work.

How to start? 15 minutes a day. 1 chapter a day. Whatever you want. As long as you a reading something positive and educational every day.

Tip: If you want to finish a book in a certain period of time then break it down to a simple math equation.

The total number of pages in the book divided by the number of days you want to read it in = the number of pages you need to read per day.

Simple!

PODCASTS
Don't want to go back to work

If you don’t want to go back to work then you need to listen to people who don’t work a job.

If you have a favorite author, motivational speaker, celebrity, influencer, millionaire, billionaire… then chances are they have a podcast!

Search for them, subscribe, and press play EVERY DAY!

And I mean, every. day.

You must inundate your prior thinking with new, fresh, positive thinking.

TRAININGS AND COURSES

If you hop on the internet it seems everyone and their mother has a course or training to offer you.

Again, this is where you need to be smart about your investments.

Will this training or this course help the thing you are focused on right now or will it take you off track and away from the big picture.

This is where having access to someone who is more successful and further along in their journey to help you is helpful.

MENTORS

Find someone who has influence in the area you want to grow in.

Is it:

  • Someone you follow on social media that is doing super inspiring things that you would LOVE to be able to do?
  • A blog that you read and follow?
  • Someone you are currently work with?
  • A successful friend or relative?
  • Someone who simply has peace in their life… in their finances, marriage, kids, etc.
  • Someone who’s making great moves in your community, state, or country?
  • Or is it no specific person at all… but just an idea you have of what you want your life to look like?

WARNING: If it’s the physical stuff that someone else has that inspires you, let me tell you, friend, that won’t be enough motivation and inspiration to keep you going. It has to be deeper than that. The level at which they impact people’s lives is what will keep you going, the peace they have, the quality of character they display… not the stuff they have.

Reach out to that person via social or email asking to be mentored.

  • If they don’t respond, that’s ok! Keep following them. Listen to their podcast, get their books, plug into their courses and trainings, etc.
  • If you get a response, great! All I can recommend here is to be the BEST student you have ever been in your life!!
    • Reaction time is everything! If they recommend something, do it immediately and report back. This is creating a trusting relationship between you and your mentor. When your mentor trusts that you will take their advice and respond to it, then they will pour more into you. The more they give you the faster you can grow.
Can I possibly stress how incredibly amazing it is that you have someone who is willing to invest their time, expertise, and money into YOU?

Yes, that’s what they are doing. Please, treat every crumb like a feast.

Having a mentor will shorten your learning curve and success path IF you follow their guidance and recommendations.

But don’t expect their time and expertise to come for free. You don’t go to school for free. You won’t get success mentorship for free either.

BE PREPARED TO INVEST

Don't want to go back to work

A huge key in your pursuit of not going back to work is one word… investment.

In yourself and your idea.

If you aren’t willing to put some money into tools and education then don’t waste your time.

If you aren’t willing to put some “overtime” into pursuing your dream then definitely don’t even start… it’ll be a complete waste of your time.

Nothing of value comes free.

The beginning of any business will be loaded with upfront time and money investment and very little return, in the seen… but the education you will be receiving will be invaluable.

Then as momentum starts to pick up your return will increase and your input will decrease.

The BEST investment you can make is in yourself and your mind.

Billionaire Warren Buffet’s top advice:

  • Marry the right person
  • Invest in yourself
  • Associate yourself with “high-grade people”
  • Work for people you respect
  • Ignore the noise
  • Success isn’t measured by money

Coming from one of the wealthiest people in the world… I highly recommend to Go here for details on each piece of his advice. It’s so good.

Speaking of marriage, if you have a significant other, be sure to have a solid conversation about your goals, vision, and plan.

If you are going to be investing extra time and money into something they need to understand what and why. They don’t need to be fully on board, but they at least need to be given a heads up on what to expect.

THE POWER OF VISION

A clear vision, backed with the courage to carry it out, significantly increases your chances of success.

It’s that simple. When your life is focused and filled with purpose, you are far more likely to experience fulfillment and significance.

Proverbs 29:18 says, “man without vision shall perish.”

According to this passage, having a vision for your life is important. So important that without one, you will perish.

This Bible verse applies in every aspect of your life: personal, spiritual, physical, financial, and in your business.

Habakkuk 2:2 says, “And the Lord answered me, and said write the vision and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that reads it.”

This reconfirms the power of writing down what you want.

  1. My biggest problem is I have no idea of what to do to be able to work for myself. No business idea, no creativity. Nada. But with my RTO date looming, the weight is crushing me to not want to go. I’ve lived my best life during quarantine. If boss would let me permanently wfo with minimal trips to the office, that would be the best world. If not, I need to find something to do that I can be at home, and make equal or more money. How does one even find that idea? Everyone and their mother is already doing everything. I have no new great idea. These are the struggles that weigh some of us down in trying to find a path & purpose in life.

So I guess the first step is finding something?
